What is a nurse practitioner (NP)?

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has advanced education, skills and clinical training. In Florida, NP’s must have a master’s degree to become certified by the Florida Board of Nursing. Health promotion and disease prevention are the cornerstones of their practice.

What do nurse practitioners do?

Nurse practitioners perform physical exams; take medical histories; diagnose and treat both acute and chronic illnesses & injuries; order and interpret lab tests and X-rays; counsel and educate; and prescribe medication and other treatments. Nurse practitioners can practice independently under the general supervision of and in collaboration with licensed doctors in the state of Florida.
